Ben Kidson Interview

It’s hard to call an artist ‘emerging’ when last year they played a show in front of 30,000 people. However, one of our ‘Ones To Watch’ artist Ben Kidson is having a change in direction for 2024.  We sat down for a very enjoyable cuppa the alternative rocker to talk through new influences, the power of TikTok and his upcoming EP, “If you’re wondering how I am, I haven’t been great”.

The Eclipse Sessions

We’ve been searching for the best new artists out there to kick the start the first (of many) exciting new plans here at the Half Moon. And it turns out we didn’t have to look too far… We’re kicking off our Eclipse Sessions- a series of intimate performances recorded in the pub after hours – with this stunning version of ‘River’ by Joni Mitchell by our very own Beau Bennett. Stay tuned for more live sessions over the next few months, but for now, why not head over to our Youtube channel below to watch the full version of this stunning cover?

Ones To Watch: IVW24
  • Ones To Watch - YOWL
  • Ones To Watch - CONN13
  • ONES TO WATCH - BEN KIDSON
YOWL are a South London based 5 piece of menacing-indie storytellers, swinging from intense proto-punk to swooning balladry. The band have been supported by DIY, NME, Radio 1, 6Music, Apple Music’s Beats 1, CLASH and more as well as playing festivals and showcases across Europe including Pitchfork Avant-Garde, Amsterdam’s London Calling and All Points East.
Last year saw their debut album ‘Milksick’ released to widespread acclaim which also accompanied their first European tour. Championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, 2024 is looking full of promise with another UK and European tour in the works, as well as summer festivals and standalone shows.
Half Moon stalwarts Yowl will be returning for their first headline show of the year on Thursday 1 February.

Conn13

A debut slot on on our Introducing night last Summer, tied in with similar shows across London, introduced Conn13’s dynamic vocals, delicate guitar skills & uncompromising, straight-talking lyrics to the capital. Since then, she has worked tirelessly through honest socials and industrious gigging, alongside a music degree to build a small, yet ever-growing, cult following.
Two of her tracks were included in our Half Moon 2023 Top Tracks (‘tears i’ve cried’ & ‘women’s freestyle’), as well as being responsible for one of our favourite modern Christmas releases last December (‘With Every Fallen Snowflake’), Conn13 is already building a set-list that lays the foundations for a massive 2024.
“Conn13’s New Moon performance last year was one of those stop-you-in-your-tracks sets, that just grabs the audience” Andy (GM)
After a recent support slot to Lola Young, you’ll be able to check her out for yourself on Thursday 1st February when she is part of a stellar Half Moon hand-picked line-up as part of our Independant Venue Week platform.
Embodying the assertive DIY attitude of punk rockers, but placed in a commercial environment, Ben Kidson moves with the times. His music combines modern pop writing and production elements (think Harry styles, Taylor swift), with the alternative rock energy and arrangement of his heroes, Nirvana. Ben has been playing at The HalfMoon for a few years now. Often seen performing last minute at our new music Monday nights (New Moon) to try out yet unheard material.
in 2023, Ben’s energetic live show earnt him a spot as a finalist at the Isle of Wight Festival’s ‘New Blood’ Competition, and at the American Express Gold Unsigned competition. If you’ve used Tiktok recently, you’ll see and hear him on an advert for Amex, which has had over 7 million views to date, and if you use Amazon Prime, you’ve likely seen him in ‘Unsigned’, a documentary about the competition itself. 2024 will see the release of his new EP, If you’re wondering how I am, I haven’t been great.
Ben Kidson will be performing as part of a special line up for Independent Venue Week 2024 on Thursday 1 February
