In 1963, three pioneers of the British blues-folk scene
got together to start a weekly live session to showcase
their music and that of others in the burgeoning genre.
They were Gerry Lockran, Cliff Aungier and Royd Rivers,
and the night was 'Folksville', and due to the quality of
acts it attracted it quickly became a mecca for blues and
folk fans and put the Halfmoon on the map as a serious music
venue.
The night was a platform for up & coming folk acts
such as Ralph McTell and Van Morrison and also featured
visiting American bluesmen such as Bo Didly, Champion Jack
Dupree and the influential Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.
Over 40 years after its initial inception, the Halfmoon
has decided to revive Folksville, at a time when the British
folk scene is thriving with quality acts old and new. Recently
we've had such names as Fairport Convention, Pentangle and
Seth Lakeman and legendary folk musicians such as Dave Swarbrick
and Martin Carthy.
As well as hosting the biggest names in folk music, in
the true spirit of the original Folksville headliners will
be supported by up & coming new artists. Check our gig
guide to see what's coming up at Foksville.
